On the centenary of Giacomo Matteotti's death, the Ecomuseo Piccolo Mondo Alpino aims to showcase the village where this important political figure was born.
WHAT TO EXPECT/WHAT WE WILL DO
A short walk through the small village of Comasine, rich in mining history, with stories and anecdotes. You will get to see up close the Church and the Bell Tower, Giacomo Matteotti's ancestral home, the characteristic farmhouses, and the stables. The walk will continue towards the Chiesetta di Santa Lucia, with tales of the place and its mining activity.
NOTES AND CURIOSITIES
Giacomo Matteotti's grandfather, Matteo Matteotti, was originally from Comasine in the Val di Peio. In 1859, the same year of his death, he moved to Fratta Polesine. His son Girolamo continued and expanded his father's business: as a merchant in iron and copper, he invested his profits in houses and land, achieving an enviable economic position. In February 1875, Girolamo married Lucia Elisabetta Garzarolo. Together, they had seven children; Giacomo was born in 1885 and from a young age became involved in politics within the Socialist Party, following his father's example. Giacomo Matteotti remains an enduring symbol of antifascism and a free Italy, and he is remembered annually in the small village of Comasine.
