Palazzo cardinal Migazzi

Description

Palazzo Cardinal Migazzi

It is a rustic-noble residence of the Migazzi Counts of Cogolo, built in the early 15th century. According to bibliographic sources, in 1420, Guglielmo Migazzi acquired properties in Cogolo, and in 1434, he settled in a "Migazzi tower" that he had built.

The tower, considered the original core of the building, was certainly not erected for defensive, lookout, or guard tower purposes for an important road or pass. It is located in a flat area near the village, which suggests that the tower had a function as a food warehouse, a place to store tithes, and a building for administering justice.

In the 15th century, a building was added to the tower; the residence was surrounded by a crenellated wall on its eastern side, with an access portal that enclosed the courtyard in front of the entrance.

Between the 16th and 17th centuries, the palace presented itself in all its grandeur. It is likely during this period that the building was embellished with the corner oriel window. In the following period, the building was again modified: the eastern wing was added, and a heightening of the existing structure was also carried out.

In the 14th century, important interior works were carried out due to the change of function of the building. Furthermore, the sketch by Caravaglia highlights how the roof structures of the time were designed with different levels, supporting the hypothesis of subsequent construction phases.

Towards the end of the 19th century, the tower was lowered, and the twin windows on the southern façade were replaced with common windows. In the 20th century, the residence was altered. The municipal administration of the time carried out works to provide greater accessibility to the ground-floor spaces, which were used for the local dairy at that time.

In 1982, the municipality of Peio renovated the ground-floor rooms of the old building to house the municipal library.

On September 10, 2018, the Director of the Cultural Heritage Department of the Autonomous Province of Trento signed the authorization for the "Restoration and Functional Recovery Project of Palazzo Migazzi". The works will begin in 2019, and the historic palace will become the institutional headquarters of the Municipality of Peio.
