Do you want to rediscover flavors from the gastronomic tradition of Val di Sole? Discover the secrets of the Caseificio Turnario in Peio Paese and visit the Molin dei Turri, the first water-powered mill in the area, later transformed into an industrial mill with the advent of electricity. You'll also have the opportunity to visit the War Museum.

WHAT TO EXPECT/ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

We will visit the Molin dei Turri and the Caseificio Turnario in Peio, where, for hygiene and safety reasons, it will not be possible to observe the milk processing.

INTERESTING FACTS/INFO

In the past, Peio had four fully operational water mills. Today, the Molin dei Turri, located in the heart of the village, is the only one open to visitors and, starting in summer 2024, it will be open for weekly tours. It has always been owned by the Turri family, passed down through generations.

The mill was partially destroyed by an avalanche on December 13, 1916, and later repaired by Paolo Turri with the help of his brother, Don Antonio Turri, who served as the accountant and manager. Along with twelve other buildings, the mill survived a massive fire on February 2, 1943, which destroyed 97 houses.

When electricity arrived in Peio, it permanently replaced water as the power source for the milling mechanisms. The mill operated with electricity until the 1970s, with Paolo Turri as its last miller. In 2018, the municipal administration purchased the mill for use as an ecomuseum.

The Caseificio Turnario in Peio is the last of its kind in all of Trentino. The milk processing method, unchanged since 1935, demonstrates the difference between industrially produced cheese and cheese made the traditional way—with care, patience, simple tools, and expertise handed down through generations.

Why is it called Turnario? Because the "caserada," or the daily cheese production, belongs in turn to one of the five members. The number of caserade assigned to each member depends on the quantity of milk they contribute to the dairy.

In 2019, the dairy won the prestigious "Resistenza Casearia" award.
